What is Trigger Finger?
Trigger finger is a condition where a finger or thumb gets stuck in a bent position and may snap or "pop" straightwith effort. It happens when the tendon that bends the finger becomes irritated and can’t glide smoothly through its surrounding sheath (a tunnel-like structure).
Over time, this irritation causes thickening or nodules that make it hard for the tendon to move, leading to pain, locking, or stiffness.
Why is This Important?
Your fingers rely on smooth tendon movement to:
Grip and hold objects
Perform fine motor tasks (like writing or buttoning)
Flex and extend freely without pain
When tendons can’t glide properly, even small daily activities become frustrating or painful.
What is Trigger Finger Release?
Trigger Finger Release is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that helps free the trapped tendon so your finger can move easily again.
It’s usually done when:
Symptoms don’t improve with splinting or injections
The finger locks frequently or painfully
Function is limited in work or daily life
How is the Procedure Done?
There are two common techniques—both safe and effective:
Open Release Surgery:
A small incision (under 1 cm) is made in the palm.
The surgeon gently cuts the tight part of the tendon sheath.
The tendon is now free to glide without catching.
2. Percutaneous (Needle) Release:
A tiny needle or blade is used under ultrasound guidance.
No incision or stitches are needed.
The procedure takes only a few minutes.
