What is the TFCC?
The TFCC (Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex) is a small but crucial structure in your wrist, located on the pinky finger side. It acts like a shock absorber between the end of your ulna bone and the small bones in your wrist. It also helps stabilize your wrist during gripping, rotation, and lifting.
When the TFCC is torn or damaged—whether from an injury or wear and tear—it can cause pain, clicking, weakness, and limited movement.
What is TFCC Debridement?
TFCC Debridement is a minimally invasive procedure where a surgeon removes the damaged or frayed tissue from the TFCC to reduce pain and improve function.
It is typically done when the TFCC is partially torn or degenerative, and conservative treatments (like splints, rest, or injections) haven’t worked.
How is the Procedure Performed?
The surgeon uses a small camera (arthroscope) and miniature tools inserted through tiny incisions (keyhole surgery).
The wrist joint is carefully examined from the inside.
Any loose, torn, or inflamed tissue in the TFCC is trimmed or removed.
The rest of the healthy TFCC is left untouched to continue supporting wrist function.
This outpatient procedure often takes less than an hour and avoids large incisions or long recovery times.
Why is the TFCC Important?
Supports wrist stability during twisting motions (like turning a doorknob).
Absorbs shock when lifting or pushing.
Plays a key role in fine motor movements and grip strength.
Damage to the TFCC can seriously affect daily tasks, athletic performance, and manual work.
