What is the Meniscus, and Why is it Important for Joint Function?

The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage located between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia) in your knee. Each knee has two menisci—one on the inside (medial) and one on the outside (lateral). They act as shock absorbers, stabilizers, and lubricators for the joint.
When the meniscus is torn—whether from sports, injury, or gradual wear—it can lead to pain, swelling, locking of the knee, and long-term issues like arthritis if left untreated.
How is Meniscal Repair Performed?
Meniscal repair is a minimally invasive procedure done through arthroscopy, where a camera and specialized tools are inserted into small incisions around the knee. Unlike traditional partial meniscectomy (removal of the damaged tissue), meniscal repair preserves the meniscus, which is better for long-term knee health.
Advanced Surgical Techniques and Technologies
Modern meniscal repair benefits from cutting-edge devices that allow for stronger, more precise repairs—even in difficult-to-reach areas. Our surgeons use the latest technologies tailored to your specific tear:
NOVOSTITCH® Pro Meniscal Repair System
This device enables surgeons to stitch horizontally or vertically inside the joint—ideal for complex or “bucket-handle” tears. It allows for 360° access to the tear site with minimal trauma to surrounding tissue.
FAST-FIX® 360 Meniscal Repair System
Known for its all-inside approach, FAST-FIX allows the surgeon to secure the meniscus from within the joint, reducing the need for additional incisions. It features pre-tied knots and delivery needles for faster, reliable healing.
JuggerStitch™ Meniscal Repair Device
This is a knotless suture implant designed for superior fixation strength. Its design allows for tight tissue compression while reducing risks of irritation from bulky knots. It’s especially beneficial for athletes and active individuals.
Stephen Curry – NBA
The Golden State Warriors star underwent meniscus surgery during his college years at Davidson. He returned to become a two-time MVP and multiple NBA champion, showing that full recovery is possible even in high-impact sports.
Roger Federer – Tennis
The Swiss tennis legend had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in 2016. He returned to win multiple titles afterward, illustrating that even for sports requiring explosive lateral movement, recovery is achievable.
